An interim budget session of Parliament is likely to be held between January 31 and February 9, sources said on Thursday. This will be the last session before the upcoming general elections.

President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of the two Houses on January 31, they said. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the interim budget on February 1.

Increasing PM Kisan Nidhi, making some attractive changes in the existing New Pension Scheme and some announcements focussing on women could be the highlight of the interim budget, sources indicated.

The suspension of Opposition MPs, whose cases were referred to the privileges committee, and the security breach of Parliament could again lead to a showdown between the ruling and the Opposition sides.

The term of the 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 16. In 2019, the Lok Sabha polls were announced on March 10 and voting was held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.
