Indian-made decorative lights are giving tough competition to Chinese products in the market this Diwali. While Chinese lights have been popular due to their innovation and affordability, many customers are now opting for Indian lights as they are more durable and require less maintenance. As per a TOI report, popular items this year include pipe light strings, battery-operated diya lights, LED light chandeliers, flower lights, special golden lights for temple decoration, and LED 'kalash' lights.

Wholesale dealer Pankaj Srivastava in Lucknow mentioned that reputed Indian companies have also launched fancy lights similar to Chinese variants, which are more expensive but have a longer lifespan. Electric shopkeeper Om Kumar added that these fancy lights are easy to maintain and can be used for years to come. However, another shop owner mentioned that customers from rural areas still prefer Chinese light strips and decorative items due to their lower cost.

The most in-demand products this year are cool light strips, diya and lantern-shaped LED lights. Handmade candles of different shapes and sizes are also popular, with prices ranging from Rs 200-300 per kg. Customers also have a preference for colorful and scented candles. However, earthen diyas continue to be a favorite choice as they give a traditional look to the festival.

Meanwhile, in Prayagraj, traders have shifted to using Indian jhaalar lights and other indigenous decorative items for Diwali instead of Chinese products. The markets are filled with designer diyas, waterproof piped jhaalars, entrance arches, cloth lamps, rangolis, chandeliers, bamboo flower pots, and desi fairy lights. Sales of traditional diyas are expected to increase by 30% compared to last year, and indigenous products are predicted to set new sales records in both urban and rural areas. Traders have placed bulk orders from companies in Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, and Haryana to meet the demand.
