Modi is visiting Seychelles at the invitation of President Patrick Herminie and will attend the country's 50th National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. During the visit, the PM met the top leadership of Seychelles, addressed the National Assembly. He was also conferred with the country's highest civilian honour, the Guardian of the Blue Horizon.
Addressing the National Assembly, the PM said defence and strategic cooperation remain at the heart of the bilateral relationship. "The passage of fifty years has changed many things. But it has not changed our commitment to one another. For decades, our defence forces, coast guards and maritime agencies have trained and worked closely together," he said. He also appreciated the role of the Seychelles armed forces in preserving peace and security in the region. "Our cooperation in maritime security, capacity building, hydrography and maritime domain awareness reflects our shared commitment to a safer and more secure region," Modi said. The PM announced an MoU to implement UPI online payment services in Seychelles, saying that digital technology is an effective way of bridging the gap between the two countries. "Work will also be done to enhance connectivity between India and Seychelles. This will not only increase our trade but also strengthen our relations with East Africa and the Indian Ocean region," he said.
Describing the blue economy as a natural and strategic area of the bilateral partnership, Modi said the two sides would continue cooperation in clean energy, including green hydrogen. "We will share India's expertise in ocean observation, marine science and coastal management with Seychelles. We are also moving forward together in the field of space," he said.
