India's ambassador to Qatar gained consular access to meet the eight Indian nationals sentenced to death in October. The meeting, held on December 3rd, is a part of ongoing efforts to provide legal and consular assistance to the individuals detained in Qatar. The spokesperson for India's external affairs ministry, Arindam Bagchi, highlighted the continuous monitoring of the situation and reiterated the commitment to extend necessary aid.

He stated, "There have been 2 hearings. We filed an appeal, from the families, and the detainees had a final appeal. 2 hearings have since been held. We are closely following the matter and extending all legal and consular assistance."

The background of this case dates back to August last year when these eight individuals, including seven retired naval officers and a sailor, were held by Qatar's authorities on undisclosed charges. They were associated with Al Dahra Global Technologies, a private firm offering services to Qatar's armed forces and security agencies. The specifics of the accusations remain unspecified, although reports suggest they were accused of espionage.

India reacted strongly to the court's decision, terming it "deeply" shocking, and immediately pursued legal avenues to challenge the ruling. An appeal has been filed against the death sentence, which has been admitted by a higher court in Qatar.

Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar affirmed the government's dedicated efforts to ensure the safe return of these ex-navy veterans. He stated, "There is total support and effort being put in by the government," emphasizing the focus on their welfare.

The recent consular access gained by the Indian ambassador is being seen as a positive step forward in addressing concerns regarding access to the detained naval personnel. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Qatar's ruler during the CoP28 summit in Dubai.

The individuals under detention, known to have held prominent positions in India's naval forces, were engaged in projects involving sensitive technology for Qatar's defense. While some media reports alleged espionage for Israel, the families vehemently denied these claims, asserting their involvement in advancing Qatar's security infrastructure.

With India actively pursuing legal recourse and diplomatic engagement, the situation remains under close observation, awaiting further hearings and legal proceedings in Qatar. The Indian government continues its unwavering efforts to ensure the well-being and safe return of these individuals facing a critical juncture in a foreign land.
