India on Saturday summoned the Iranian ambassador in New Delhi to lodge a strong protest over a firing incident involving two Indian-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

In an official statement shared by Randhir Jaiswal, the Ministry of External Affairs said the envoy was called in for a meeting with the Foreign Secretary, who conveyed New Delhi’s “deep concern” over the incident earlier in the day.

India underscored the importance it attaches to the safety of merchant shipping and mariners in the strategically vital waterway, and recalled that Iran had earlier facilitated the safe passage of several India-bound ships.



Reiterating its concern over the firing at two Indian-flagged vessels, India urged Iranian authorities to ensure the safety of ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and to resume facilitating the movement of India-bound vessels at the earliest.

The Iranian ambassador undertook to convey India’s views to authorities in Tehran, the statement added.
