On Monday, India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a strong condemnation of Khamenei's comments, which had criticized the treatment of minorities in India.
Ayatollah Khamenei's comments:
“We strongly deplore the comments made regarding minorities in India by the Supreme Leader of Iran. These are misinformed and unacceptable. Countries commenting on minorities are advised to look at their own record before making any observations about others,” the ministry stated.
Earlier on Monday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei highlighted the "suffering" of Muslims in India, Gaza, and Myanmar in a message marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed.
The message, posted on X, called for global solidarity among Muslims but did not provide specifics on the situation in India.
"The enemies of Islam have always tried to make us indifferent with regard to our shared identity as an Islamic Ummah," Khamenei had written further.
However, this is not the first time that the Supreme leader has commented on situation of minorities in India. Back in 2019, Khamenei had said, "We have good relations with India, but we expect Indian govt to adopt a just policy towards the noble people of Kashmir and prevent oppression and bullying of Muslims in this region."
