India rolls out first customized 19-coach rake for Bangladesh Railway

Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala has another reason to celebrate as it prepares for the launch of the first rake with a configuration of 19 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Railways has been quoted in the press release saying the rake consists of 03 AC sleeper coaches, 03 AC chair coaches, 11 Non-AC chair coaches and 02 Power cars. The coaches have features of which many have been designed for the first time.

The information shared in the release says that these coaches were custom-designed according to the operational needs and exigencies of Bangladesh Railway.


The seating arrangement includes specially designed reclining seats in chairs with metallic armrests and footrests providing multiple angles for passengers’ comfort. All amenities for passengers are included in the coaches, such as the fans in the AC coaches, integrated video surveillance system, alarm system for passengers, windows that can be partially opened, Baby Care room, and Prayer room.

In light of the specific working conditions, the roof design has been adjusted to accommodate extra weight associated with passengers traveling on the roof during busy periods.

According to the announcement made, an important technology feature is the installation of crashworthy design features meeting European Standard EN 15227. As a result, the design of the carriage body had to be radically changed to improve collision resistance and ensure safety for the passengers.

As mentioned in the document, the cooperation between the Railway Coach Factory and Bangladesh Railway started in 2015-16 when 120 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches were successfully dispatched.
