The Indian Postal Department plans to discontinue its Registered Post service from September 1, 2025. The decision marks the end of a service that has operated for over 50 years and comes as part of a strategic integration with Speed Post to modernise and streamline postal operations. The department is planning to merge the Registered post service with speed post.

Registered Post was priced at Rs 25.96 plus Rs 5 for every additional 20 grams, while Speed Post starts at Rs 41 for parcels up to 50 grams, making it 20–25 percent more expensive. The higher cost may impact small traders, farmers, and citizens in remote areas who depend on affordable postal services.

Transition to Speed Post and operational integration

The Secretary and Director General of Posts directed all departments, courts, educational institutions, and other users to complete the transition by September 1. The merger aims to enhance service delivery through improved tracking, faster delivery times, and better operational efficiency under the Speed Post system, which has been in use since 1986.

Decline in usage and shift to digital alternatives

The move follows a steady decline in demand for Registered Post, attributed to increased digital adoption and competition from private courier services and e-commerce logistics. According to official data, the number of registered items dropped by 25 percent—from 244.4 million in 2011–12 to 184.6 million in 2019–20.

Public sentiment and historical significance

Although Speed Post will continue to offer key features such as tracking and acknowledgement of delivery, the decision has evoked a sense of nostalgia among users, especially older generations and rural communities. Registered Post has long been regarded as a symbol of trust, known for its legal validity, affordability, and reliability.

A legacy service rooted in history

Originating during the British colonial era, Registered Post played a critical role in secure and legally recognised document delivery. It was widely used by banks, universities, courts, and government departments for its evidentiary value, with proof of posting and delivery often admissible in legal proceedings. Its discontinuation marks a significant shift in India's communication infrastructure.
