Following the announcement of a 'ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, as termed by US and Islamabad, Indian government sources confirmed that key measures such as the suspension of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and visa services will remain in place.

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri in his statement made it clear that India-Pakistan have only reached an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.

Government sources clarified to ET that there is no rollback on these measures as the ceasefire has been agreed to without any preconditions. But the earlier decisions on the suspension of visas and IWT engagement continue to remain in force.

India had halted bilateral engagement on the Indus Waters Treaty in the aftermath of April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which was traced back to Pakistan-linked groups. Since then, the treaty framework has remained in abeyance.

Similarly, visa services between the two countries were restricted following the deadly attack on civilians and Pakistani nationals were being deported.

The sources said that that the talks were initiated by Pakistan’s DGMO and that the decision was entirely bilateral, with no involvement from third countries. It is aimed solely at reducing immediate tensions along the Line of Control and does not indicate any broader diplomatic talks, the sources said.
