Union minister pitches India as voice of Global South and advocate of reforms at the UN
New Delhi: India has launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term, with external affairs minister S Jaishankar unveiling the 'SHANTI' framework as the cornerstone of New Delhi's approach to global governance.

Launching the campaign at an event at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, attended by diplomats and UN officials, he said India's engagement with the UN would be guided by SHANTI - Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust, Integrity.

He outlined six priorities for India's candidature: Voice of the Global South, advancing reformed multilateralism, promoting future-ready peacekeeping, addressing threats arising from the misuse of artificial intelligence, securing maritime commons and countering terror financing.

"We are all aware that global governance has to reform in order to transform," Jaishankar said. "For that to happen, multilateralism must be democratic, representative and effective... There will be understandably different points of view and divergent interests on the major issues of the day. But that only enhances the value of harmonising them and enabling the Security Council to be more robust, responsive and ready. Nations like India, which have a long history of bridging differences and building consensus, can certainly make their due contribution."

Jaishankar said India had put forward a human-centric vision of AI that draws on both its capabilities and India's traditions. "That is why the recent AI Impact Summit in India was based on a vision of 'AI for all'. Equally important, we are also determined to counter the misuse of AI and threats it may pose to international peace and security in different ways," he said.
