In a move to position India as a hub for global academic and technological collaboration, the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the G20 Talent Visa. Targeted at scholars, researchers, and professionals from G20 nations, this initiative aims to bolster India's scientific and educational ecosystem.

The announcement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal at the G20 Summit in September, where he emphasized the need to create opportunities for top talent in science and technology.

Speaking at the summit, the Prime Minister Modi said, “Similar to how all countries issue different categories of visas, we can establish a ‘G20 Talent Visa’ as a special category. This type of visa could be highly beneficial for our top science and technology talent to explore global opportunities. Their talent and efforts can contribute significantly to our economies.”

By introducing the G20 Talent Visa, India seeks to strengthen its position in the global academic and technological landscape. The visa aims to attract exceptional talent to Indian institutions, fostering innovation and driving advancements in key sectors.

Key highlights of the G20 Talent Visa
The G20 Talent Visa, categorized under the S-5 sub-category of the student visa framework, will facilitate entry for individuals engaged in post-doctoral research, academic projects, fellowships, and specialized training programs. Designed to attract high-caliber talent from G20 nations, this visa represents a significant step in fostering global partnerships and innovation in India.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been tasked with promoting the visa to higher education institutions across the country. Institutions are encouraged to share information with stakeholders, faculty, and researchers to maximize awareness and participation.

How the G20 Talent Visa works
The G20 Talent Visa will enable international scholars and researchers to participate in various academic and research-focused activities in India. It is specifically tailored for individuals in science, technology, engineering, and academia, aiming to facilitate cross-border academic and technological exchange.

India’s G20 Talent Visa draws inspiration from similar global programs aimed at attracting exceptional talent:
  • UK’s Global Talent Visa: Targets individuals in fields like science, engineering, humanities, and digital technology. Applicants require endorsements from recognized bodies, ensuring only top-tier talent is eligible.
  • Australia’s Global Talent Visa: Focuses on highly skilled professionals and offers a pathway to permanent residency. Applicants must secure endorsements from Australian organizations.
  • US O-1 Visa: Grants entry to individuals with extraordinary abilities in various fields, including arts and sciences. Unlike the G20 Talent Visa, it has a broader scope, covering a wide range of professions.
