India as the leader of Global South has the potential to play a pivotal role in ending "brutalities" in Gaza, Iran's envoy to India Iraj Elahi has told ET.

"India has always been a steadfast bastion of morality and humanity on the global stage. The indelible mark left by Mahatma Gandhi's teachings and his inspiring words on Palestine are etched in the collective memory of all. These principles have paved the way for India to emerge as the resounding voice of the Global South. It is undeniable that India has a rich history of upholding moral courage and demonstrating the indomitable human spirit," Elahi told ET in a free-wheeling interview.

"I firmly believe that India will not turn a blind eye to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In fact, India has the potential to play a pivotal role in putting an end to the brutalities," he said when asked about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

He also informed that Iran and India have made substantial progress in resolving key issues related to the Chabahar Port, paving the way for the signing of the contract as the next logical step towards its implementation. It may be pointed out that India recently organised a meeting on Chabahar Port in Mumbai which was attended by all stakeholders including Iran, Central Asian countries and Armenia.

Elahi also hinted at Iran's collaboration with neighbouring Arab countries to address regional issues instead of working with outside powers to address regional challenges. "Drawing from history's lessons, we understand the paramount importance of fostering regional solidarity and fraternity, while guarding against unwanted interference... For centuries, we have coexisted harmoniously, transcending religious, linguistic and ethnic differences, until the advent of Western colonialism in West Asia."

"We firmly believe that all nations should concentrate their efforts on putting an end to the hostilities against the Palestinians," Elahi added.

Denying allegations of Iran's role in the October 7 attack carried by Hamas on Israel, the envoy said, "While Iran plays a crucial role in supporting the resistance movement, recent developments over the past three weeks have highlighted the independent agency of each element within this thriving movement."
