Flames and smoke rise following an Israeli airstrike on Dahiyeh in the southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, Thursday, June 5, 2025.
India urged both Iran and Israel on Friday to refrain from any further escalation and to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy in the wake of a surge in hostilities between the historically disputing nations.

“India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.

The remarks come hours after Israel launched a series of airstrikes deep inside Iranian territory, in what it termed Operation Rising Lion. The coordinated strikes targeted nuclear and military infrastructure, marking a significant escalation in the long-standing conflict.

India expressed deep concern over these developments, adding that it is “closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites.”

Reiterating its ties with both nations, the MEA statement further noted, “India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support.”

The statement also said Indian diplomatic missions in Tehran and Tel Aviv are in contact with the Indian community. Indian nationals in both countries have been advised to remain vigilant and follow local security advisories.

“All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,” Jaiswal added.

What triggered the israeli strikes?

Israel’s operation comes amid rising concerns in Tel Aviv over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the strike was a “targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival.”

An Israeli military spokesperson described the airstrikes as a “preemptive, precise, combined offensive,” aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and long-range missile capabilities.
