India’s growing global weight strengthens its case for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council
Earlier this week, India’s longstanding claim to a permanent spot in the United Nations Security Council got fresh support as four European nations spoke in its favour. India’s lack of veto power is at odds with its growing heft in the global economy and large population. India even makes its payments to the UN on time, while some permanent members accumulate arrears and stay absent from peacekeeping activities. As the UN rapidly loses favour in some countries, India stands out with its continuing support, Pew surveys show.
