Imphal Ratha Yatra festival chariot attacked by miscreants

GUWAHATI: Miscreants attacked under preparation chariot. The chariot is prepared for the upcoming Ratha Yatra festival in Imphal.

Police sources said that the incident occurred around 12:30 am on Friday near the crossing of Sana Konung. “Miscreants came in the car and fired two rounds. The Imphal East police were alerted.”

Last year due to ethnic strife the Ratha Yatra was celebrated in a low-key manner


Meanwhile, staff of a private hospital and residents of the locality held a sit in protest in Uripok Achom Leikai.

They were protesting a recent gun attack at the hospital. The incident took place on July 4. Residents stated that it was shocking that hospitals have become the target of such attacks.

Dr. Naorem Yaikhomba Khuman, the Managing Director of Angel Children's Hospital, described the attack as highly unfortunate. He recounted that the hospital, established just two years ago, has been dedicated to serving the community, even amidst the ongoing crisis.

Police sources said that unknown assailants fired two rounds at the hospital's reception counter. “It appears that it is a case of extortion demand however we are investigating the same.”

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.

The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
