IMD's heavy rainfall alert for Kerala, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana amid cyclonic activity over south India

The monsoon is expected to advance further into the remaining central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, southern Maharashtra, Goa, and other regions within the next 4-5 days. Two cyclonic circulations are present over Kerala and Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh.

The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into parts of the south Peninsular India, the India Meteorological Department has said in its latest update. It spread into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been observed in isolated regions of north Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya. Additionally, heavy rainfall was reported in isolated areas of Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and south interior Karnataka.

Monsoon progress

The monsoon's progression is expected to continue, likely reaching the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and extending into southern Maharashtra, Goa, remaining parts of Rayalaseema, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh, IMD said. It will also likely advance into parts of south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and further into the Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 4-5 days.

Two cyclonic circulations

Two cyclonic circulations have been identified: one over Kerala and its neighboring regions, and another over the westcentral Bay of Bengal, adjoining the southwest Bay of Bengal near south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu at lower tropospheric levels. Strong westerly winds are also prevalent along the Kerala coast.

Due to these influences fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) expected over Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Karnataka. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema over the next five days.

Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Mahe, South Interior Karnataka from June 3rd to 7th; Tamil Nadu on June 3rd and 5th; Telangana from June 4th to 6th; North Interior Karnataka from June 3rd to 6th; Coastal Karnataka on June 3rd and 4th; and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on June 3rd and 6th.

Isolated very heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Mahe and Coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 3rd.

Record rainfall in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, a record-breaking rainfall event occurred on June 2nd. The city received 111 mm of rain, surpassing a 133-year record for the highest single-day rainfall in June. This surpassed the previous record set on June 16, 1891. The rainfall on June 1st and 2nd together amounted to 140.7 mm, exceeding the monthly average for June.

The intense rainfall caused significant disruption in Bengaluru, particularly in the Jayanagar area where fallen trees and flooded streets impeded movement. A tree falling on the Metro track near Trinity Metro station added to the inconvenience.

C S Patil, head of the IMD Centre in Bengaluru, confirmed the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over Karnataka and issued a yellow alert for certain districts until June 5th. The affected districts include Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada in coastal Karnataka, as well as Bagalkote, Belgavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, and Vijayapura in north interior Karnataka.
