The collaboration will facilitate the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the IIT Guwahati campus, focusing on developing industry-ready talent and advancing research in semiconductor packaging technologies.
With the aim of addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the semiconductor industry, the partnership will develop education and training programmes aligned with industry requirements.
It will also strengthen the semiconductor talent ecosystem in Assam and the Northeast by creating opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.
The MoU was signed at the IIT Guwahati campus by Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Guwahati, and Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) of Tata Electronics.
Other dignitaries present at the signing ceremony included IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Dean of Administration Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Vaswati Sarma Borthakur of Tata Electronics, Erwin Estepa and J M Nowful.
Under the agreement, IIT Guwahati will lead the development and delivery of educational programmes, including diploma-level training and BTech engineering courses in semiconductor ATMP. These programmes will incorporate practical, hands-on training into the curriculum.
Beyond setting up the CoE, the collaboration will involve identifying engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics to expand access to semiconductor-focused education and training. The two institutions will jointly develop industry-relevant course content, educational resources and specialised training programmes, while also training faculty members from participating institutions to strengthen their semiconductor teaching capabilities.
The partnership will provide students with hands-on training opportunities at Tata Electronics and enable undergraduate and postgraduate students to undertake collaborative research in semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and related technologies.
Speaking about the collaboration, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said, “This initiative aims to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research. By identifying relevant institutions across Assam and supporting the development of semiconductor-focused curricula, the collaboration will broaden access to specialised technical education and strengthen the regional talent pipeline.”
The partnership is aimed at expanding India's semiconductor talent pool and strengthening its capabilities in semiconductor technology and workforce development.
