An IIM Ranchi student has creatively used artificial intelligence (AI) tools to reimagine Leonardo da Vinci's iconic Mona Lisa as an Indian woman. The artwork has sparked widespread interest and humor online, showcasing the intersection of AI and cultural reinterpretation in modern art.

AI Transforms a Classic Masterpiece

Rashi Pandey, a student and artist, shared her AI-generated version of the famous portrait on social media platform X. The artwork presents the Mona Lisa in traditional Indian attire, including a suit with a dupatta draped over her forehead, and adorned with Indian jewelry such as a maang tikka, earrings, and a statement necklace. Sharing her creation, Pandey wrote, “I made the Indian version of Mona Lisa using AI. Give her a name.”

A Wave of Online Creativity

The post quickly gained traction, with users playfully suggesting names to reflect the Indian adaptation of the Mona Lisa. Suggestions included ‘Shona Lisa,’ ‘Mona Tai,’ and ‘Lisa Ben,’ along with comments imagining how the masterpiece might appear in different regional styles.

One user wrote, “Add Bindhi or some other claim Monalisa Begum or Monalisa Mary.” Another commented, “She looks like a hyperloop clone version of Kareena Kapoor from the movie Three Idiots.” A user humorously added, “Monali from Rajasthan. Monali Sa.”

Not all comments were lighthearted. One user expressed admiration for the artwork, stating, “To be frank, this is beautiful—more womanly than the original. Sorry art connoisseurs, this is a layman’s opinion.”

The Role of AI in Art

AI has opened new horizons in creative expression by enabling artists to explore unique ideas and reinterpret classic works. By offering access to advanced tools and vast data, AI allows creators to push boundaries and experiment with diverse artistic styles.
