IIM Shillong enrolls highest-ever number of North East Indian students in 2023

IIM Shillong organized the Commencement ceremony to welcome the 16^th Batch of the two-year full-time Post Graduate Programme (PGP 2023-25) and Doctoral Programme (2023).

This year, the programme witnessed the enrolment of 390 students in PGP batch and 17 in the Doctoral Program.

Prof. K K Aggarwal delivered a thought-provoking address to PGP students, highlighting the challenges and rewards they will encounter beyond the institution.


He emphasized the importance of creating a future and seizing the opportunity provided by one of the best IIMs. During his speech, Prof. Aggarwal emphasized the value of “collaboration over competition”, recognizing the advantages of diverse perspectives and teamwork. He encouraged students to work together to achieve greater success.

Prof. Aggarwal emphasized the practical application of knowledge and experience, cautioning against relying solely on gut feelings. He urged students to make informed decisions using their education effectively. The Chief Guest also called for sustainability and creativity innovation to be fundamental qualities of every graduate. He acknowledged the global consequences of neglecting sustainability and emphasized the need for creative thinking to find solutions to contemporary challenges.

Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra, Executive Director & Head, Indian Oil Institute of Petroleum Management and Former Director (Human Resource), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., captivated the students with his speech at the Commencement Ceremony, appreciating the aesthetic beauty of Shillong and celebrating the diversity among the students. His inspiring address encouraged the empowerment of female leaders within the institute and urged the students to make the most of their time at IIM Shillong.

Mohapatra highlighted the “significance of lifelong learning and purpose-driven actions.” He emphasized the value of embracing diversity and leveraging its strength to foster innovation and growth.

Mahopatra underscored the importance of agility, adaptability, and sustainability in the face of change. He encouraged the students to actively shape their future while striving for excellence, emphasizing the need to embrace new challenges and continuously improve themselves. The message is to embrace individuality and contribute to collective success is inspiring. His insights on empowerment, lifelong learning, diversity, and adaptability serve as guiding principles for the students' personal and professional development.


Prof. D P Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, highlighted the institute's commitment to developing leaders with “global outlook, grounded in Indian values.” He urged the students to remain humble, disciplined, and focused throughout their two-year journey at IIM Shillong. He celebrated the institute's 15-year establishment, its global reputation for excellence, and transparent placement records. Prof. Goyal's address set a positive tone for the student's academic journey at IIM Shillong. His words of encouragement and recognition of the institute's accomplishments serve as a reminder of the commitment to excellence and the nurturing environment that awaits the students.

IIM Shillong's Post Graduate Programme enrolment for the current year showcases the highest diversity quotient, with an impressive representation of participants from various backgrounds. The institute proudly reports that female participants represent 51.6%, while male participants account for 48.4%. This year, IIM Shillong achieved a significant milestone by welcoming the highest-ever number of students from North East India. A total of 12 students from the region have enrolled, highlighting the institute's commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity.
