With the northeastern states witnessing fresh influx from Myanmar owing to clashes between the Junta military and pro-democracy forces, the Manipur government has said that it is identifying illegal migrants/refugees across the state, including Kamjong and other places where recent reports suggested more people coming in from the neighbouring country.

Following fresh fighting in Myanmar, hundreds of people have taken shelter in Kamjong which alone shares a 109 km border with Myanmar.

A senior official, who did not want to be named, told ET, "Hundreds of refugees have entered Manipur. We are taking their biometric details."

Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh took to social media about the issue and said: "Many have been asking if the state government has been identifying illegal migrants across the state. I would like to reaffirm to all concerned people, yes, all identification work is being taken up by the state government, that is why it was extended up to March 2024. Thus, all such identification of illegal migrants/refugees are being done/will be done across the state including Kamjong and other places where there were recent reports of more people coming in from Myanmar."

The Manipur government had found as many as 2,187 illegal immigrants had taken shelter in Manipur after the military Junta took power in Myanmar.

Five Manipur districts -- Churachandpur, Chandel, Kamjong, Tengnoupal and Ukhrul share a 398-km long international border with Myanmar.
