'I Love Muhammad' row: 10 key points on Bareilly violence and cleric Tauqeer Raza's detention
Police on Saturday detained Tauqeer Raza Khan, chief of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, a day after clashes broke out between his supporters and the police during a protest linked to the “I Love Muhammad” campaign in Bareilly.

Here are the key developments:

The trigger: ‘I Love Muhammad’ campaign

The controversy originated on September 9 in Kanpur, when boards with “I Love Muhammad” written on them were installed during a Barawafat procession, said a PTI report. Hindu groups objected, calling it a deliberate provocation. Since then, the issue has spread to other districts of Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

Friday prayers turn violent in Bareilly

On September 26, large crowds gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and the residence of cleric and Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. The gathering was linked to protests in support of the campaign. Police said 90–95% of the crowd dispersed peacefully after prayers, but a group of miscreants began pelting stones and firing, sparking chaos.

Ten policemen injured, dozens detained

At least ten police personnel were injured in the violence. Over two dozen individuals were detained immediately, with more arrests likely as authorities pore over video and photo evidence to identify others involved.

CM Yogi Adityanath’s stern warning

Speaking at a media event in Lucknow on Saturday, CM Yogi Adityanath said those who believed they could disrupt law and order “forgot who is in power.” He declared there would be no curfew or roadblock in UP and promised strict punishment to deter future riots.

Authorities call it a conspiracy

DIG Ajay Kumar Sahni described the violence as a “pre-planned conspiracy,” pointing to the sudden organized attack at multiple locations. Extensive videography was carried out, and police vowed “exemplary punishment” to prevent recurrence.

Govt links unrest to state development

The UP government’s Information Department issued a statement alleging the violence was aimed at creating a “negative atmosphere” in Western UP to undermine the Noida International Trade Show and discourage foreign investment.

Ministers back strong police action

UP Minister Anil Rajbhar called the violence an act by those “who cannot digest India’s and UP’s development,” warning that strict measures would be taken so that “future generations will remember.” Another minister, Asim Arun, stressed that processions without permission would not be tolerated.

Cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan under spotlight

Although CM Adityanath did not name anyone directly, his remarks appeared directed at Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, who had initially called for the protest. Authorities said his rally had been denied permission, but supporters still turned up.

Delhi High Court plea challenges FIRs

Meanwhile, the Muslim Students Organisation of India and Raza Academy moved the Delhi High Court, challenging multiple FIRs against people displaying “I Love Muhammad” posters. They argued the cases were “communal in nature” and an attack on their fundamental right to religious expression.

A polarising national debate

The row has widened, drawing commentary from AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who said saying “I Love Muhammad” is not a crime. With cases now registered in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka, the controversy is no longer local but part of a broader communal and political flashpoint.
