I-Day: PM Modi hails judiciary's translation efforts, CJI Chandrachud responds with folded hands

During his Independence Day speech on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the efforts being made by the Indian judiciary to make available its key judgments in regional languages.

"I want to thank the Supreme Court that now the operative part of its judgments will be available in one's mother tongue. The significance of regional languages is increasing," Modi said.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who attended the event as a guest, was seen responding to the Prime Minister's remark with a folded-hand gesture.


The PM's remark was in reference to the Supreme Court's move to upload around 1,000 of its verdicts in regional languages as part of this year's Republic Day and its foundation day celebrations.

The move seeks to help people be more familiar with the legal process by making judgments available in their mother tongue.

As many as 9,423 judgments have been translated into regional languages so far. 8,977 of them are in Hindi.

The goal is to make a total of 35,000 key decisions accessible to people in all languages.

Other than Hindi, verdicts are now available on the SC site in Odia, Gujarati, Tamil, Assamese, Khasi, Garo, Punjabi, Nepali and Bengali. According to reports, more languages are soon going to be added to these.
