Hyderabad: IMD issues thunderstorm yellow alert for today

Several districts in Telangana, including Kamareddy, Hyderabad, Nirmal, Siddipet, Nagarkurnool, and Medchal-Malkajgiri, experienced heavy rainfall for the fourth straight day on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting thunderstorms in several districts, including Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal-Malkajgiri.

Gandhari Records Heaviest Rainfall

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Gandhari, Kamareddy district, at 97.3 mm. Hyderabad also saw moderate rainfall, with Patigadda receiving the highest at 40 mm. Commuters in Hyderabad were seen navigating rain-soaked roads as the city witnessed a fresh spell of rain on Tuesday morning.

Air Quality Remains Satisfactory

Despite the rainfall, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Hyderabad remained satisfactory across most parts of the city. As of Tuesday morning, the AQI readings were 65 in Sanathnagar, 79 in Ramachandrapuram, 77 in ECIL Kapra, and 75 in IITH Kandi.

IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert

The IMD had earlier issued a thunderstorm alert for 17 districts in Telangana on Monday. The sudden downpour in Hyderabad on Sunday caught many people off guard, particularly those out for weekend activities. However, the rain brought much-needed relief from the heat that had gripped the city earlier in the week.

Monsoon Rainfall Highest Since 2020

According to the IMD, India’s monsoon rainfall this year was the highest since 2020, with above-average precipitation recorded for three consecutive months. From June through September, the country received 107.6 percent of its long period average rainfall, helping it recover from last year’s drought conditions.
