Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the democratic transition in Bangladesh and congratulated the winning Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the people of the country.

Mirwaiz, who heads Muttahida Majlis e Ulema, a grouping of around 50 religious and social organisations across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh also welcomed “free and fair elections”.

“We welcome that after free and fair elections, a new government is coming to office in Bangladesh. We congratulate the winning BNP and the people of Bangladesh,” he said while addressing the Friday congregation at the Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

He said the people of J&K pray for peace, stability and prosperity for the people of Bangladesh.

“I hope that good relations among all neighbouring countries are established that could help usher peace, progress and lasting stability in the region," said Mirwaiz.

The Hurriyat leader said that Jama Masjid in Srinagar had remained the central place of collective worship, reflection, repentance and supplication, especially during Ramzan, and there should be no restriction placed here in the holy month.

“I hope that the authorities will not impose restrictions as witnessed in previous years on significant occasions such as Shab-e-Qadr, Juma-tul-Vida and Eid-ul-Fitr,” he said.

Mirwaiz said that it deeply hurts the sentiments of people when, without reason, the largest mosque of the Valley is forcibly closed on such sacred occasions. “Closure of a central place of worship during the most sacred days of the Islamic calendar causes anguish among the faithful and undermines the spirit of the holy month,” he said.

Mirwaiz urged the people to come to Jamia Masjid in large numbers during Ramzan and make the most of this blessed month.
