Hundreds of children of Myanmar refugees join local school in Mizoram

Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga had earlier urged the Centre to provide asylum to refugees fleeing Myanmar. He had also opposed the Centre’s order to the security forces to stop Myanmar citizens from entering the state and deport refugees.

Hundreds of children of Myanmar refugees have joined local school in Mizoram. A senior Mizoram official who does not want to be named told ET, "Over 300 children are across various districts have joined school."

Myanmar is under a one-year state of emergency after Senior General Min Aung Hlaing took power. The military junta has detained the country's elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her government.

Thousands of Myanmar nationals are taking shelter in Mizoram.


Mizoram, which has 11 districts, shares a 510-kilometre-long unfenced border with Myanmar.

Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga had earlier urged the Centre to provide asylum to refugees fleeing Myanmar. He had also opposed the Centre’s order to the security forces to stop Myanmar citizens from entering the state and deport refugees.

The Union home ministry had in a communique to the chief secretaries of Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, and the director general of Assam Rifles, said on March 10 that there was a probability of large-scale illegal influx into India due to the situation in Myanmar. It had earlier issued an advisory to these states and the security forces to stay alert and take appropriate action to prevent their entry.

The ministry had also said that state governments had no power to grant refugee status to any foreigners
