As ethnic violence continues to escalate in Manipur, security agencies point to the rampant circulation of fake news and rumours as the root cause of the ongoing unrest in the state. The clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis, which began on May 3, have resulted in the loss of over 160 lives.

Officials told ToI that fake news and misleading videos have played a significant role in inciting violence. For instance, the horrifying incident on May 4, where two women were paraded naked and assaulted in Kangpokpi district, occurred after a fake picture claiming a tribal murder in Churachandpur was circulated in Imphal valley.

Security agencies' analysis has also shed light on the lack of control over fake or one-sided news, even in local newspapers, further exacerbating the situation. Reports suggesting possible attacks by members of the majority community have also fueled unrest in the state.

In response to the misinformation, the police have established a 'Rumour Free Number' for verifying information and curbing the spread of disinformation. Despite their efforts, the situation remains challenging, and it may take time before the internet can be fully restored in the state.

As Manipur grapples with the consequences of the ongoing violence, addressing the dissemination of fake news and rumours becomes crucial in restoring peace and stability in the region.

The video of the two women being paraded naked by the members of a different community surfaced last week, triggering a nationwide outrage.
