The incident took place at Charms Castle society in Raj Nagar Extension, when Rahul Kapri, a sales manager at a private company, witnessed the theft live and streamed on his mobile phone while he was with his family on a vacation.
He immediately notified the society's security staff and the police.
The suspect, Ayush Vohra, was later arrested on Monday.
According to the TOI report, both men lived on the same floor in tower F, with Vohra residing in flat 1004 and Kapri in 1007, just across the corridor.
“Around 5 am on Monday, Vohra entered Kapri’s flat. It seems he was unaware Kapri had installed a CCTV camera inside the house, which sent an alert to his phone. Kapri could see Vohra break into his flat and walk around. In his complaint, Kapri said he immediately alerted the society’s maintenance and security staff and the police. He returned to Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon and submitted a complaint,” TOI quoted ACP Nandgram Ravi Kumar as saying.
This was the second time Vohra had intruded into Kapri’s flat within a month, according to the police official.
Vohra told the police that he had been working at a call center in Noida but lost his job a few days ago. Needing money, he resorted to theft, the officer explained.
“Ayush claimed that about a month back his neighbour had left the key to the main door hanging on the door’s lock. He took a soap impression to make a duplicate key. He used it to steal Rs 15,000 from Kapri’s house about a month back. The Kapri family installed a CCTV camera soon after,” the ACP elaborated.
Kapri mentioned that even as his family was leaving for Nainital on Sunday, they encountered Vohra in the lift.
The accused has been charged under IPC sections 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 380 (punishment for theft) and has been remanded to judicial custody.
