Home Minister Amit Shah assures Manipur CM Centre will honour people’s wishes

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh that the Central government will fulfil the wishes of the people of the state.

This was stated by the Union Home Minister when the Manipur Chief Minister called on him at his official residence at New Delhi.

Shah will also visit the state in the first week of October this year. During his visit, the Union Home Minister will lay the foundation stone of the new Senapati Medical College and oversee other developmental projects of the state.


Singh said that the Union Home Minister has agreed to lay the foundation stone of the new Medical College in Senapati district. The State Cabinet had recently decided to open a new Medical College in the Senapati district, predominantly inhabited by the Nagas.

Shah gave a patient hearing to all the issues relating to the state as raised by Khemchand Singh. The Union Home Minister then informed the Manipur Chief Minister that the Central government will fulfil the aspirations of the people of Manipur.

The Union Home Minister also lauded the State Government for its success in the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service and ensuring free movement on the National Highway 2.

Khemchand Singh also met Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju at his official residence in New Delhi. The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues concerning the state of Manipur.

Khemchand Singh requested the Union Minister to help the development and welfare of minority communities in the state. He sought help from the Union ministry of Minority Affairs on various developmental projects.

The two leaders also discussed issues relating to the Manipur Assembly elections slated for early next year.

Rijiju assured the Manipur Chief Minister that his ministry will provide all possible help to the state. The Union Minister is a native of Arunachal Pradesh and has a close connection with Manipur.

The resumption of public transport along the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati route via NH2 continued smoothly on its fifth day, with 268 passengers leaving Imphal in a fleet of 19 vehicles.

The vehicles comprised 5 buses, 14 small vehicle. The convoy departed from Imphal at around 10:10 am on Wednesday.

The continued movement of public transport along NH2 reflects the ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe and smooth travelling of passengers along the route.

Laishram Bhonilal, Joint Secretary of the Interstate Taxi Association, said that the initiative taken by the new government and the Transport Department to restore road transportation after a prolonged period of restricted travel due to the conflict, was a very positive and welcome step.

He said that the resumption of road transportation would greatly benefit passengers of all communities in Manipur, who had been facing difficulties in travelling freely for several years.

Khoirom Binodini, a passenger from Phubala who was travelling to visit her children working in Kohima, said that she had previously travelled by flight, but the high airfare was unaffordable for ordinary people.

“I heard that the government had taken steps to restore road transportation, so I booked a ticket and came here alone. I am not scared. Seeing many passengers travelling together also makes me feel happy,” she said.

She expressed her gratitude to the government for taking the initiative, adding, “I once again thank the government for this step.”

Another passenger, Thangjam Brajakishor from Wangjing, said that after being unable to travel freely for the past three to four years due to the conflict, the resumption of road transportation had come as a major relief, particularly for people struggling with the high cost of air travel.

“I used to pay around Rs 8,000 for a flight ticket to Guwahati. Now, I can travel to Guwahati for around Rs 1,000 and visit my child. This is a huge relief for people like us,” he said.

He thanked the government and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh for the initiative and urged the government to further expand the resumption of road transportation to more routes and destinations.
