India has recorded several cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing mild to severe symptoms. On Tuesday, two new cases emerged in Nagpur, following earlier reports of infections in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Salem. HMPV primarily affects children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

MHPV Testing Costs

HMPV testing requires advanced diagnostic tools, such as the BioFire panel, which can identify multiple pathogens, including HMPV. As per reports, the cost for an HMPV RT-PCR test ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 at leading labs like Dr Lal PathLabs, Tata 1mg Labs, and Max Healthcare Labs. Comprehensive tests, covering HMPV along with other respiratory pathogens, may cost up to ₹20,000. Samples for testing include nasopharyngeal swabs, sputum, and tracheal aspirates.

Understanding HMPV

HMPV, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory RNA virus commonly active during colder months. DThe virus primarily affects the respiratory system, especially among young children and elderly individuals with lower immunity levels.

HMPV symptoms in healthy adults resemble those of a common cold, such as a sore throat, cough, and nasal congestion. However, vulnerable groups might develop severe complications, including pneumonia and respiratory distress. Infants and older adults are particularly at risk of symptoms like rapid breathing, cyanosis, and wheezing.

HMPV Treatment Options

There are no specific antiviral drugs for HMPV. Mild cases usually recover with home care, but severe symptoms may require hospitalization. Treatments include oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, and corticosteroids to manage respiratory issues.

Government Guidelines and Preventive Measures

Experts advise against panic but stress the importance of precautions. Former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan recommends wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded places.

How to prevent yourself from HMPV transmission:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap or use sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid close contact with individuals showing respiratory symptoms.
  • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms like wheezing or shortness of breath arise.
  • While HMPV is not new, vigilance and timely medical care remain crucial to managing its impact.
