Hindu activist's killing: Police detain 12 persons

As police stepped up their presence and surveillance in the wake of murder of a 26-year old Hindu activist, Shivamogga city returned to normalcy on Tuesday. The Karnataka Police have detained about a dozen people in connection with the brutal killing of the youth, Harsha, after arresting three persons for their role in the crime on Sunday night, Home Minister Araga Jnanendra told reporters in Bengaluru.

"The police department will take the investigations to their logical conclusion, and will not spare anybody involved in the crime. They will, at the same time, not go after innocent people," he said. The government is determined to ensure such murders don't recur.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah urged the government to hand over investigations of the killing, and the violence during the funeral procession on Monday for a judicial probe. Monday's violence, he said, has left several properties destroyed and saw attacks on locals. The judicial probe should cover these aspects too, he said, while urging the government to ensure the men involved in the crime got capital punishment.
