Himanta Sarma to move SC, Gauhati HC over threat to gherao his residence in Zubeen Garg case
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported receiving threats regarding bail decision for accused in Zubeen Garg's death case. A group led by MLA Akhil Gogoi announced intentions to gherao his residence if bail is granted. The Supreme Court ...

Speaking to reporters, the chief minister said the threat, allegedly issued by a group led by a legislator, posed a “danger to my family and could amount to a direct attempt to murder”.
The Supreme Court will hear the bail petitions of prime accused Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma on November 30.
The Gauhati High Court granted bail to singer Amritprava Mahanta, an accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, on October 9 against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. It has also granted bail to Sandipan Garg in the case.
Sarma pointed out that the high court had ordered bail for Amritprava Mahanta. The court order noted that 160 witnesses had not named her during the hearing, although they had done so during the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
“People should question the witnesses, not me. The court should be allowed to do its work. The call to gherao my residence by a group led by an MLA, if bail is granted to Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma, is a serious matter. They are not saying that they will protest near the chief minister’s office but at his residence, which is a threat to my family and could amount to a direct attempt to murder,” he said.
The Zubeen Garg Nyay Samiti, led by Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi, said on Thursday that it would gherao the chief minister’s residence if Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma were granted bail or if the state government failed to mount an effective legal opposition.
Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, after becoming unresponsive during a second swim near Lazarus Island.
The Special Investigation Team of Assam Police filed a chargesheet in the case on December 12, naming seven arrested accused, four of whom were charged with murder. More than 60 First Information Reports were subsequently lodged across Assam.
Between October 1 and 10 last year, Assam Police arrested seven people in connection with the case. Those arrested included Singapore festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg's manager Siddhartha Sharma, musicians Amritprabha Mahanta and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, his cousin Sandipan Garg, and two of his personal security officers.
The accused faced charges including murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy and financial offences.
The SIT later filed a 2,500-page chargesheet, with the total case documents running into more than 12,000 pages.
Four of the accused were charged with murder, Sandipan Garg with culpable homicide, while the two personal security officers faced charges including criminal conspiracy. All seven have pleaded not guilty.
In March 2026, a Singapore court ruled that Garg's death was an accidental drowning, finding no evidence of foul play, coercion or poisoning.
The Gauhati High Court constituted an exclusive fast-track sessions court for the trial. In May, charges were formally framed against all seven accused, who pleaded not guilty.
