When asked whether there was a move to defer the census in Assam by a year, the chief minister told media persons, "I have not received any communication from the Registrar General of India (RGI), as of now. We have already posted directors for the census. There are several Supreme Court orders on the National Register of Citizens (NRC). There is no correlation between the NRC and census." He added, "The Assam government's official stand is that there must be census in the state."
The Union ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement sent by PIB on March 25, 2020, stated that Census 2021 was scheduled to be conducted in two phases, Phase House listing & Housing Census during April-September, 2020, and Phase II Population Enumeration from February 9 to 28, 2021. The updation of NPR was proposed to be done along with phase I of Census 2021 in all states/UTs, except Assam.
