Himachal turns white: Season's first snowfall brings joy to tourists

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, recently witnessed its first snowfall of the season, transforming the region into a picturesque winter wonderland and bringing immense joy to tourists experiencing the scenic beauty.

However, snowfall led to the closure of the Atari-Leh National Highway 3 and Firozpur-Shipki La National Highway 5. The State Emergency Operation Centre also reported power disruptions, with 18 transformers affected across multiple districts.

Popular tourist spots, including Kufri, Chail, and Narkanda, turned into winter wonderlands. Shimla's iconic Ridge, Mall Road, and Jakhoo Peak were blanketed in 2.5 cm of snow. Tourists expressed their joy, with one visitor from Haryana calling the sight of snow-clad mountains a first-time, breathtaking experience.

Snowfall brought piercing cold to high-altitude areas, where temperatures ranged between -12°C to -18°C. Tabo in Lahaul Spiti recorded a frigid low of -12.3°C, while lower hills experienced light rain.

Despite the freezing conditions, daily activities in Shimla continued, with schools staying open for exams.

Snowfall disrupted traffic and power supply but brought respite to apple growers and farmers after a prolonged dry spell. The snow deficit in Himachal reduced slightly, helping replenish water resources. However, the state still recorded significant rainfall deficits, highlighting climate challenges.

The Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning for dense fog in areas like Bhakra Dam and Balh Valley. Drivers and residents are advised to remain cautious during early morning and late-night hours. Further snowfall and fog are likely, keeping the region on alert.
