High-level inquiry will be conducted to fix responsibility for violence: N Biren Singh

That state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for those who died, Rs 2 lakh for grievously injured and Rs 25,000 for non-grievous injury. Upto Rs 2 lakh to families whose houses were burnt down, homes burnt/damaged will be re-build.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said that at the earliest, a high level enquiry will be conducted to fix responsibility on the persons and groups who instigated the violence and government servants who abdicated responsibility.

That state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for those who died, Rs 2 lakh for grievously injured and Rs 25,000 for non-grievous injury. Upto Rs 2 lakh to families whose houses were burnt down, homes burnt/damaged will be re-build.

“Around 60 innocent people have lost their lives, 231 people suffered injuries and around 1700 houses burnt down in the unfortunate incident of May 3,” Singh said.


The state last week witnessed unprecedented violence leading to curfew and internet ban. The ban is extended till May 13.

Biren while talking to media persons in Imphal said, “Around 1041 arms and 7460 ammunitions were snatched, while government has recovered 214 arms and 4273 ammunitions.”

He said that 50 companies of central armed police force and 105 columns of Assam Rifles and Army are deployed in addition to the state police force for maintaining law and order.

“Superintendents of Police have been directed to identify vulnerable areas, and ensure round-the-clock provision of full-proof security and protection for land and property, in the absence of their owners, with assistance of Central security forces, military and paramilitary forces, till resumption of normalcy in these areas. They have been directed to take immediate action as per law against persons attempting to loot or occupy such land and propert.Superintendents of Police will be held personally accountable for any lapses in this regard”.

He added, “Transportation of persons who have been stranded in various districts — Tengnoupal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpl, Ukhrul, Imphal West, Imphal East, etc. for return to their respective homes have started. As stranded people are being transported to safety, I request all not to hinder the efforts to transport families and people back to the safety of their homes. All efforts are being made to protect life and property, without discrimination, across the state.”

He added that victims are innocent people. "Let us all strive to bring peace and normalcy in the shortest possible time. I appeal to the public to extend their maximum cooperation to security forces to enable them to execute their tasks. Public are also requested to cooperate and assist in creating a safe and conducive environment to enable affected families to return to their respective homes.I appeal to all not to spread or believe in unfounded, unverified and baseless rumours. Till date 35,655 persons have been moved to safe locations. From amongst this, 1,593 have travelled outside the State, who are mainly students”.

He added that from safe locations/ shelter camps, around 20,000 people have moved to their houses/ villages.
