The meeting focused on defining the objectives, scope, and framework of the proposed UCC. Chairperson Ranjana Desai was joined by committee members, including retired senior IAS officer C.L. Meena, advocate R.C. Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar, and social activist Gita Shroff.
The committee underscored its commitment to conducting a comprehensive review of existing laws through an inclusive consultation process involving diverse stakeholders. It aims to establish a progressive and well-structured legal framework that upholds justice, equality, and social harmony across Gujarat. Emphasizing the need for uniformity in personal laws, the committee highlighted the importance of ensuring equal rights for women and children while strengthening the state's social fabric.
The committee's findings and recommendations will be compiled into a report for submission to the Gujarat government, serving as a foundational step in shaping the state's legal landscape.
It may be mentioned here that Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel last week had announced a five-member committee under retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai to study the matter and draft the Code.
The committee is scheduled tp submit its report in 45 days, and “the state government will take an appropriate decision”, basing on the report, Patel had announced.
Gujarat minister of state for home affairs Harsh Sanghavi had pointed out that the UCC will fully protect the rights of the tribal and said Uttarakhand’s UCC has presented a model before the country and that it fully protects the traditions and customs of the tribal population.
