Hema Panel Report: Survivors reluctant to pursue legal action; SIT stalls in 35 abuse cases
Kerala police grapple with 35 FIRs stemming from the Hema Committee report on sexual abuse in the Malayalam film industry. Many survivors are hesitant to pursue legal action, hindering the investigation reliant on their testimonies. Actor Mala Pa...

The FIRs were filed by a special investigation team set up to address allegations of molestation, attempted rape, and rape, with incidents dating back to the early 2000s. According to TOI, due to the passage of time, there is little circumstantial evidence, leaving the investigation reliant on survivor testimonies—testimonies that are now deemed insufficient for further legal proceedings.
Many of the survivors have expressed disinterest in taking the matter forward, leaving law enforcement uncertain of how to proceed with the cases. While the survivors have refrained from naming their alleged assailants, police believe they could identify the culprits based on the clues provided in their statements to the committee.
As a result, the FIRs remain under wraps to protect both the identities of the survivors and the high-profile suspects involved, while the investigation continues, the TOI reported noted.
According to the report, Actor Mala Parvathy, who testified before the committee, has now approached the Supreme Court to quash the special investigation team's probe, arguing that the investigation is harassing innocent individuals.
The outcome of her legal challenge could have significant consequences for both the investigation and the broader conversation about accountability in the industry.
Meanwhile, G Poonguzhali, AIG (coastal security), has been appointed as the nodal officer to handle survivor complaints and provide protection from potential threats and intimidation related to the Hema Committee report.
