Heightened security measures around Sambhal's Shahi Jama Masjid ahead of Friday prayers

Security has been ramped up around the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the Friday prayers, following recent tensions in the area. The deployment of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and drones has been put in place to maintain law and order in the district.

These precautionary measures come after a violent stone-pelting incident during the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) examination of the Mughal-era mosque on November 24. The clashes led to the loss of five lives and several others being injured, including both local residents and ASI officials involved in the survey.

In response to the violence, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has set up a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission, headed by retired Justice Devendra Kumar Arora of the Allahabad High Court. The commission's purpose is to conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.


Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by the Sambhal Shahi Jama Masjid Committee on Friday. According to the court’s cause list for November 29, a bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna will consider the plea filed by the Committee of Management of the Shahi Jama Masjid.

Most shops in Sambhal reopened for the first time on Thursday since the November 24 violence, which erupted over a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era mosque and resulted in four deaths and several injuries.

"The situation is completely peaceful and normal," said ASP Chandra in an interview with PTI Videos.

Regarding the upcoming Friday prayers, he added, "Sufficient police force has been deployed and we are prepared to tackle any situation."
