Low Pressure Area over south Bangladesh likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over many states in India over next 3 days.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intense rainfall across East and East-Central India over the next few days, driven by a low-pressure area currently centered over south Bangladesh and Bay of Bengal and active monsoon. This weather system is expected to bring significant downpours to several states, with the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific regions.

Low-Pressure System Over South Bangladesh

The low-pressure area remains over South Bangladesh and its neighboring regions. The IMD predicts that this system will initially move north-northwestward before shifting west-northwestward over the subsequent three to four days. The path of this system is expected to cross Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Heavy rainfall warning

Gangetic West Bengal is expected to bear the brunt of this weather system, with very heavy rainfall forecast until August 20. The rain is likely to continue at a reduced intensity on August 21, but it will still be significant. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will also experience heavy rainfall during this period, influenced by the same weather system. The IMD has warned that the sustained heavy rains could lead to localized flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

Rainfall Outlook for Northeast India

In addition to the eastern states, the IMD has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall across the northeastern region, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, over the coming week. Specific areas such as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience isolated very heavy rainfall. This pattern of heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Assam and Meghalaya on August 20.

The IMD also highlighted other weather systems contributing to rainfall in various parts of the country. A cyclonic circulation over Southwest Pakistan and its neighboring areas is influencing weather patterns in the region. Another cyclonic circulation over Rayalaseema and a trough extending from the Arabian Sea to the Comorin area are expected to enhance rainfall over South India, particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep, during the next two to three days.

The IMD's forecast extends to the northern and central parts of India, where scattered to widespread rainfall is expected over the coming days. Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh are likely to see fairly widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall predicted in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from August 20 to 21. East Rajasthan is also expected to experience heavy rainfall between August 22 and 25.
