Heavy rain lashed several parts of Odisha, while a red alert for intense rainfall has been issued for three districts

Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Odisha, while a red alert for intense rainfall has been issued for three districts on Sunday as a low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal in the morning, weather department officials said.

The low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coasts on Sunday morning became well-marked within a few hours and is likely to move west-northwest across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, they said.

Under its impact, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Balasore received heavy rainfall on Saturday. Rajghat in Balasore recorded 156.2 mm of rain while Kusumi in Mayurbhanj district gauged 133 mm of rainfall.

Twelve other towns recorded heavy rainfall, the IMD said in a bulletin.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a 'red alert' for Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts for Sunday.

Also, an 'orange alert', advising people to be prepared for a calamity, has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Anugul, and Dhenkanal.

Heavy rainfall activity is likely to continue in Odisha for another two days, the weather office said, advising fisherfolk not to venture into the sea till August 31.
