Heavy water release from Maharashtra’s Ujani reservoir into the Bhima River has caused severe flooding in Kalaburagi district’s Afzalpur and Jevargi taluks, impacting numerous villages along the river basin. Officials reported that around 3.5 lakh cusecs of water were discharged, exacerbating the flood situation.

Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Tarannum inspected the Mannur care centre and met families displaced by the floods. The families appealed for permanent housing, highlighting their vulnerability due to annual flooding along the Bhima River.

Widespread damage across Kalyana Karnataka region

Incessant rainfall and overflowing rivers have disrupted life across the Kalyana Karnataka region, including Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bidar, Vijayapura, Raichur, and Koppal. Crops, homes, and infrastructure have suffered extensive damage, with large areas of farmland growing pulses, cotton, sugarcane, and grapes submerged, causing significant agricultural losses.

Fatal wall collapse in Bagalkote district

Tragedy struck Bagalkote district on Friday night when 11-year-old Darshan Nagpa Lathura died after a wall collapsed at his Mahalingapura home. His brother, injured in the incident, is receiving medical treatment. Officials also reported losses of livestock due to flooding.

Relief efforts and rescue operations underway

Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are evacuating residents from low-lying and riverbank areas. Floodwaters have washed away roads and bridges in several locations, complicating relief work.

Priyank Kharge visits Kalaburagi

Kalaburagi district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge said 36 villages have been severely affected. “Our top priority is people’s safety. We have opened 36 relief centres where over 1,500 people are being provided shelter and freshly cooked food,” he stated in a post on X.

Supported by volunteers, the district administration is conducting continuous operations to protect residents and livestock from the ongoing flood crisis.
