Health crisis in Assam: Union Minister urges assessment as diarrhoea-like illness claims lives in Tinsukia tea estate

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed concern over the recent diarrhoea outbreak at Tongona Tea Estate in Tinsukia, resulting in 11 deaths. He engaged with Assam's chief secretary and the district commissioner to provide immediate assistance.

GUWAHATI: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the Assam chief secretary and the district administration to assess the situation arising out of a “diarrhoea-like illness” taking epidemic form, resulting in the death of 11 persons in a tea estate in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Sonowal has expressed profound concern over the recent outbreak of diarrhoea-like illness resulting in the unfortunate demise of 11 individuals at Tongona Tea Estate in Tinsukia.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Sonowal engaged in direct communication with Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam, Ravi Kota, and District Commissioner of Tinsukia, Swapnil Pal, to assess the situation and directed the officials to provide immediate assistance.


Expressing his heartfelt condolences, Sarbananda Sonowal extended prayers for the departed souls and offered his deepest condolences to the affected families. Sonowal has directed the concerned authorities to take adequate measures and ensure the well-being of the residents of Tongona Tea Estate.

Panic had gripped the residents of the tea estate. Earlier, a diarrhoea outbreak in a tea estate in neighbouring Dibrugarh district had claimed two lives and infected many others.
