Haryana khaps urge govt to ban live-in relationships, make parents' nod mandatory for love marriages
Haryana khaps, including Kandela and Majra, are pushing for legislation requiring parental permission for love marriages and banning live-in relationships to combat rising honour killings. They threatened statewide protests if necessary. They urge...

They urged the opposition to take up the issue if the ruling NDA does not introduce bills on both the issues.
“we don’t have any issue with the love of court marriages but parents’ nod must be added while solemnising marriages by young couples. It is very painful that parents raise a girl till the age of 18 thereafter, she elope carrying Aadhar card along with her by shattering dreams of their parents,” said Samundar Phour, spokesperson of Majra khap, to TOI.
He urged the centre to introduce an act for this. He also suggested the government decrease the legal age for marriage of girls to 16 years.
the centre should bring an act on this issue. Moreover, the age of marriage should be decreased rather than increasing it. Government should fix the 16-year age for girls' marriage as they become mature following the foods being consumed by them in the current era,” he added.
Talking about love marriages, he said, “Love marriage without consent of parents and live-in relationship will not be accepted in the society henceforth, ruling parties and opposition parties should come together to save the social culture of the country which is adopting western culture gradually.”
Om Prakash Kandela, head of Kandela khap said that both issues are a stigma in the society. “Khap never engages in honour killing,” he said. However Kandela added that they demanded nod of parents in love marriages and scrapping of live-in relationships after seeing the ground situation.
