Haryana Anti-Terrorism Squad formed; to have dedicated police stations in Panchkula, Gurugram

Chandigarh: The Haryana government has formed Anti-Terrorism Squad, a specialised agency within the CID department, to deal with issues related to terrorism.

The ATS within the Crime Investigation Department has been created to promote efficiency of police service to combat terrorism and deal with issues related to terrorism, according to a government notification.

The ATS will be headed by an officer not below the rank of Inspector General of Police. That officer will report to the Director General of Police through the head of CID.

The headquarter of the Anti-Terrorism Squad will be at Panchkula, according to a notification dated June 10 issued by State Home Department.

Two ATS police stations created under the squad will function at Panchkula and Gurugram. These police stations will investigate offences related to terrorism for Haryana, it stated.

Panchkula ATS police station will have jurisdiction over Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Kaithal, Hisar, Hansi, Fatehabad, Jind, Sirsa, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri.

The Gurugram ATS police station's jurisdiction will be over Sonipat, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, Rewari and Mahendragarh.

Last month, Haryana's DGP Ajay Singhal had announced that state's ATS is likely to start operations from June.

In March, during his budget speech in the state assembly, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also holds the Finance portfolio, had announced that for effectively dealing with and preventing terrorist activities, a ATS will be constituted.

Earlier, the chief minister's announcement on ATS had come close on the heels of busting of a white-collar terror module in Faridabad last year.
