Haridwar flood: Cars swept away in flooded Sukhi river after heavy rain

Viral videos of cars floating in a river in Haridwar surfaced today. According to reports, the water in the river swelled up dramatically following heavy rains, causing many cars to be washed away in the floodwater.

According to some reports, dozens of vehicles parked in the Sukhi River were washed away after heavy rains. News wire agency PTI said rainwater gushed into homes and left major roads in the pilgrimage town waterlogged.

"As the rainfed Sukhi river is generally dry, people habitually park their cars on the dry riverbed. As the river got flooded all of a sudden, the cars were swept away in the swirling waters. The river joins the mainstream of the Ganga a short distance away. People gathered on the bridges over the Ganga near Har ki Pauri to capture the visuals of the floating cars on mobile cameras," it added.


Many people took to social media to share the scary visuals.

"Flood situation in Haridwar, Uttarakhand as vehicles parked near the crematorium were swept away due to a sudden rise in water level in the river," wrote another person.


The India Meteorological Department on Saturday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Northwest India, including Uttarakhand. The weather office said conditions are favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon.

The heavy rainfall is expected to lead to localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses, mainly in urban areas.

Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall and disruption of traffic in major cities due to waterlogging on roads is expected to result in increased travel time. There are also possibilities of damage to vulnerable structures.

The IMD has suggested that travelers check for traffic congestion on their route before leaving for their destination and avoid areas that often face waterlogging problems.
