Guwahati Schools Holidays: Kamrup Metro district announces vacation till January 6 as temperature dips to 6 degrees below normal

With daytime temperatures dipping 6.4 degrees Celsius below normal in Guwahati, all government and provincialised schools in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam have been closed for a week due to harsh winter conditions. The decision comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of light rain, cloudy skies and fog across parts of the state.

Guwahati schools to remain closed till January 6

The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration ordered the closure of schools from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026, citing extreme cold conditions affecting students’ health.

“In view of the ongoing extreme cold wave, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has directed all government & provincialised schools to remain closed from December 31, 2025 to January 6, 2026,” the Chief Minister's Office said in a post on Tuesday night.


Provincialised schools are private institutions that have been taken over by the government.

Classes to resume from January 7

Authorities said normal academic activities will resume from January 7, keeping student safety as the top priority.

The Inspector of Schools (IS) of Kamrup Metropolitan district issued a formal advisory directing schools to remain shut for one week.

“All heads of schools are hereby advised to inform students, parents and staff accordingly. Ensure that no academic or co-curricular activities are conducted during this period. Take necessary steps for the smooth resumption of classes after the reopening,” it added.

The IS also asked private schools to take their own decision in the interest of students.

Guwahati Weather: Temperature drops sharply

According to the MET Department, Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 18.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 6.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 15.1 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees above normal.

The department forecast cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle in the city. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 19 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Northeast Assam at 1.5 km above mean sea level. The upper air cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh at 1.5 km above mean sea level has become less marked,” the daily weather report on Northeast said on Tuesday.

Cold, drizzle and fog set the mood

Over the past two to three days, cloudy weather has dominated Assam, with several areas, including Guwahati, witnessing daytime drizzles. Shallow to moderate fog is also expected at isolated places till Thursday morning.

As temperatures stay low, people are seen lighting woodfires along roadsides to keep warm. Markets have reported a sharp rise in demand for heavy woolens.

While the extreme winter has made daily life tough, especially for poorer sections, some residents say the chilly weather has created a perfect mood for welcoming the New Year.
