The police in Gurgaon have introduced drones to manage traffic on NH-8, making it the first time such technology has been used for this purpose in the city. The drones are being deployed to identify congestion and facilitate quicker response times, as well as issue fines for lane driving violations, a TOI report stated.

On Friday, the first drone was set up, resulting in the issuance of at least 50 fines to drivers of commercial vehicles who abruptly switched lanes on the expressway. More drones are expected to be put into operation starting from Monday.

NH-8, also known as the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, experiences heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours when individuals commute to and from offices in the NCR city. Even a single breakdown can lead to significant traffic jams if not resolved promptly.

Previously, drones were used for surveillance and announcements in November 2020, during a surge in Covid cases. During that time, cameras were used to identify individuals violating Covid protocols and issue fines to them.

According to a survey, one of the main causes of accidents on highways is the unsafe practice of changing lanes at high speeds without indicating.

Using drones to monitor blackspots is deemed more convenient than deploying police officers to manually stop and check vehicles, which could potentially worsen congestion.

Virender Vij, DCP (traffic), todl TOI, "We will maintain strict vigilance against lane driving violations on the highway. Recently, there has been a significant improvement in compliance with lane driving among commuters. Drone footage will greatly assist us in identifying violators. Currently, we have one drone, but we will acquire several more from Monday."

Officials noted that commuters are generally more cautious at major intersections where CCTV cameras or police officers are present. However, they tend to disregard traffic rules on stretches that lack surveillance. Common violations on the highway include speeding and changing lanes without signaling. The introduction of drone-based fines is expected to encourage greater compliance among drivers.

The drones will also aid in faster response times to traffic congestion. The footage captured by the drones will be monitored in a control room, enabling the dispatch of teams to congested areas. A similar approach will be taken in the event of a breakdown.

So far this month, the traffic police in Gurgaon have issued 6,866 fines for lane driving violations, resulting in a collection of Rs 58 lakh in fines. The fines have primarily been imposed on owners of 5,797 trucks, 518 passenger buses, and 211 vehicles affiliated with educational institutions.

Currently, only commercial vehicles are penalized for lane violations. The fines for such violations range from Rs 500 for the first offense to Rs 1,500 for subsequent violations.
