Gurgaon Biker Death: SUV driver was not only on wrong side, but also without a licence

Shocking details are now emerging from the Gurgaon accident case in which a biker lost his life after a head-on collision with an SUV coming from the wrong side. According to reports, the SUV driver was not only driving on the wrong side but also did not have a valid driving license. Earlier reports claimed he was a repeat offender with multiple challans in the past for driving on the wrong side.

Kuldeep Kumar Thakur, co-founder of a PR firm, had previously been fined for similar traffic violations and may not possess a valid driving license.

Police suspect that Thakur, 25, attempted to obtain a driving license retroactively through a tout following the accident. He has been released on bail and has yet to submit his license, if any, to the authorities. Last month, Thakur was fined for driving on the wrong side and illegal parking.


The incident occurred around 5:25 am on Sunday when bikers Akshat Garg and Pradyumn Kumar, both from Delhi, were traveling on a one-way lane off Golf Course Road. Thakur's XUV 300 approached from the wrong direction and collided head-on with Akshat's bike, resulting in Akshat's death, despite his wearing a helmet and safety gear.


Police reported that Thakur likely took the wrong side deliberately to reduce travel time but initially claimed he was following directions from Google Maps. Immediately after the accident, Pradyumn alleged that Thakur called someone to arrange a lawyer. The SUV had a BJP candidate's campaign sticker on it. Pradyumn also claimed that police refused to accept footage from his GoPro camera showing the incident, a claim that police have denied.

Based on Pradyumn's complaint, an FIR was filed at the DLF 2 police station against Thakur under IPC sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving), and 324(4) (causing damage exceeding Rs 20,000), along with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Thakur's bail has sparked reactions from Akshat's family. Akshat's mother, Rekha Garg, questioned police actions: "My son is gone, but the accused slept peacefully at night," she said. "I want justice for my son. Why are the police dragging their feet in the case? He should be arrested right away."

According to ACP Vikas Kaushik, they are awaiting Thakur's driving license submission and may add relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act to the FIR. "He submitted other documents but claimed he did not have his license at the time. So, we gave him time until Friday to submit it. We believe he doesn't have a four-wheeler license. We will now include relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act in the FIR and take action accordingly," he added.

Kaushik also stated that police are investigating Thakur's past offenses. "We will dig out all his previous challans and call him for further questioning. We are just waiting for the notice period to end by Friday night," he said.

Akshat, an ITI graduate, worked as a food delivery agent to support his family and would have turned 22 around Diwali this year.
