The two accused were arrested on September 7 after allegedly attempting to enter the mall premises with the fake PMO ID card and a firearm. They were initially remanded to police custody for questioning.
The incident took place ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai for the Global Fintech Fest. Police have clarified that there is no connection between the two accused and the Prime Minister’s programme.
The accused, identified as Rohan Parikh (24) and Dilip Kunde (49), were produced before a magistrate court here at the end of their police custody. Kunde was allegedly carrying a licensed revolver and six live cartridges.
Police said the men arrived at Jio World Plaza amid heightened security ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. During security checks, personnel noticed the suspicious identity card, which allegedly claimed an affiliation with the PMO, as well as the firearm. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.
Investigators used CCTV footage and vehicle details to trace the accused. Parikh was detained from his residence in Khar, while Kunde was arrested from Kalyan.
A third person, identified as Prathamesh Bagul, has also been named as an accused and is currently absconding, according to the police.
The case has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Crime Intelligence Unit, which is investigating the circumstances behind the attempted entry, the fake identity card and the presence of the firearm on the premises.
Police are also probing the motive behind the alleged use of the fake PMO identity card. Authorities have so far said there is no evidence linking the accused or their actions to the Prime Minister’s visit or the Global Fintech Fest.
