Setalvad was arrested by the Gujarat Police on Sunday morning while Shreekumar was arrested on Saturday evening after he was summoned to the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. Setalvad was picked up from her Juhu residence in Mumbai by the Gujarat ATS on Saturday evening.
They were arrested after an FIR was filed against them by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch Inspector DB Barad following the Supreme Court judgement that gave a clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riot cases. The court had dismissed the plea by Zakia Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsaan Jafri, who was killed by a mob in the Gulbarg Society massacre in February 2002.
Speaking to media persons, Ahmedabad DCP (crime) Chaitanya Mandalik had earlier said that the FIR was filed on the basis of the observations made by the apex court, which said that “all those involved in such abuse of process, need to be in the dock and proceeded with in accordance with law.”
Mandalik had also maintained that both Teesta and Shreekumar were not cooperating in the investigation process and the police would seek 14 days of custody. The FIR filed against the trio alleges forgery, fabrication of evidence to procure conviction of capital punishment and criminal conspiracy.
