60-year-old is the first case of Omicron's XE variant in Gujarat

In what may be the first case of Omicron XE variant of Coronavirus in Gujarat, a 60-year-old male has been found infected with the virus.

Health officials in Vadodara told ET that the man along with his wife had travelled to Vadodara from Mumbai and was tested for Coronavirus on March 12. “Since he was from outside the state, his sample was sent for genome sequencing and the results revealed that this was a case of Omicron XE variant,” said Dr. Devesh Patel, Medical Officer, Vadodara municipal Corporation.

“However, the man has returned to Mumbai with his wife and his identity documents revealed an address of Santacruz, Mumbai” Patel said, adding that the case documents are now being handed over to the authorities in Maharashtra.


“Our team had rushed to the hotel he had stayed in last night and carried out contact tracing. It seems did not contact anyone here,” he added.
